Africa: Our Journey #21 Questions

Another beautiful day!  Africa doesn't have his blanket on anymore so he was covered in mud again.

Africa: Our Journey #20 He did it!

Another beautiful day.  Even warmer than yesterday.  Africa loves having his blanket off.  He was running around the pasture getting mud up and down his legs and under his belly.  There were even splashes on the rest of his body.

We have been working on standing still while being groomed.  It is difficult for a RBE. But  Africa was calm and still today, standing with one leg cocked through the whole grooming.

Africa: Our Journey #19 Connection

It felt like spring today.  I wore a down vest rather than my Carthart to the barn.  The sun was shining and the sky was a bright blue.

Africa: Our Journey #18 Missing time to play

I'm missing my handsome boy.  This week is so full of obligations I won't have time to spend with Africa until Friday.

Took my partner to the airport tonight and for the next two nights I have Parent/Teacher Conferences.  But Friday is a day off with lots of time to play.

Visited Africa tonight for a few minutes on my way back from the airport.  He was just coming in for the night.  I gave him cookies and a good rub.  Can't wait until Friday.

Africa: Our Journey #17 Proud!

What a dreary day here! :(  I'm tired of the snow, ice, and clouds. And now it's a wet mist filling the air with haze.

Now that I have complained about the weather, I must say that when I go to the barn to spend time with Africa, the gloom seems to disappear.

It's not horribly muddy yet, so with his blanket on he stays clean.  Like always when I call his name, he head comes up to look at me.  When I go into the pasture, walk toward him and then wait, he comes to me ready for a rub and the halter.  I love that!

Africa: Our Journey #16 Progress & Horsenality Report

So much to blog about tonight.  Africa and I made a big step in one of the games and my Horsenality Report for Africa came.

Africa: Our Journey #15 The Big Green Ball

I've had a week bout with flu, so barely got out to the barn to say "hi" to my handsome boy.  Went out tonight after work and gave him free run of the arena.  When snow is on the ground outside, the horses don't run around very much.  So Africa loves the time in the arena to shake off all the "buggies".  He played with the big green ball today, too.  He pushes it with his head and front legs.  Sometimes he'll use his neck to give it a shove.  Today he tried to jump on it with his front legs, but it rolled out from under him.  He wa

Africa: Our Journey #14 The Dance of Liberty

I am so excited!!!  As well as our riding lessons, Africa and I are working at liberty.  I will be attending a clinic with Jesse Peters this summer and we are given the opportunity to do a Savvy Spotlight.  Well, with the help of another clinic attendee, I am combining my two passions.  The spotlight will include playing my flute and playing with Africa at liberty and freestyle.  The details are coming together, but most importantly Africa is joining me in the dance of liberty.  In order to play my flute, I can not use my hands or a stick so he and I are l

Africa: Our Journey #13 Attitude and Confidence

I just read Linda's blog entitled Finesse Breakthrough, dated 02/11/2010.  She was talking about a lack of confidence when Remmer got stronger.  When she watched the video, Remmer was "fantastic".  So the next day she came back with a different attitude and more confidence.  Her comments about doubting herself as a student really spoke to me.  Just as Linda was explaining, I can feel out of my comfort zone and get disillusioned.

Africa: Our Journey #12 The Wonder of Liberty

Oh my goodness!  Africa and liberty: I am always amazed at the connection that happens when we play at liberty.  Today we had the arena to ourselves.  During the winter, the arena gives him a chance to run around, leap, buck, and snake his neck.  While he was expressing some of his energy and enthusiasm, I set up the barrels for figure 8.  We first played "stick to me" at walk, at a faster pace, and whoa. (The back up still needs practice.)  Then we tried the figure 8 pattern on-line.  When I took the lead rope off, he followed my cues

Africa: Our Journey #11 Freestyle Sideways Game

Africa and I are working on Sideways game for Freestyle.  He does a great job on-line, but I think I'm not using the right cues.  Africa gets agitated and acts like he doesn't understand.  We try a couple of times with direct and indirect reins, moving forequarters and hindquarters alternately.  At this time, when he gets one step each way I praise him and we stop.  Maybe I need to try and increase the number of times he is successful before we stop.  It is a fine line between frustrating him and getting practice.  He is amazingly forgiving, so m

Africa: Our Journey #10 Squirrel on Line????

Couldn't get on-line last night when I got back from the barn.  Comcast was out this evening to put a new line into the house.  He said it looked like a squirrel had chewed the wire.  Poor squirrel! I hope he wasn't electrocuted.

Africa: Our Journey #9 Amazing RBI

Africa, my handsome RBI, is so amazing and tries so hard to do what I ask him to do.  Today while reviewing the figure 8 pattern on-line, he would stop and ask a question about what to do next. Steady pressure and quick release helped Africa move forward and complete the pattern.  We continued until Africa made four passes without hesitation.  What amazed me was how calm and relaxed we felt.  There was no impatience, frustration, or fear for either of us.

Africa: Our Adventure #8 Music (cont.)

The music continues and Africa's response was different.  Today as I walked toward him, his nose reached out.  He followed me a bit and then wandered off.  He amazes me!

We also rode today, practicing several points from the Centered-Riding lesson I had last week.  Africa stood at the mounting block without moving his hindquarters.  The circling around the block last week helped him feel more at ease.  He followed the rail with less correction.  He was calmer and happier.

Africa: Our Journey #8 Music and the Horse

I'm learning to play the flute and have had a dream to play it while horseback riding.  Well..... that dream may become reality.  How exciting!  This summer I am attending another clinic with Jesse Peters (3-Star professional instructor).  During this clinic we have the opportunity to present a Saavy Spotlight.  Another clinic participant had an amazing idea to incorporate my flute playing, liberty, and freestyle.  So today I decided to see how Africa would respond to the sound of the flute.

Africa: Our Journey #7 A Dilemma

The dilemma:  Does a committed Parelli student take riding lessons from a non-Parelli instructor?

Africa: Our Journey #6

Will I ever figure out my Right-Brain Introvert?  I feel like I'm starting over with him.  Today we focused on standing quietly while being groomed.  I held the lead rope loosely when he was standing still and corrected when he wanted to wander.  Lots of "good boy" and rubbing his neck.  We even played throw-the-towel-over all zones.

Africa: Our Journey #5

Africa came to me as I walked into the pasture tonight.  He seemed to be napping when I got there.  He recognizes my voice and looks up when I call his name.

Africa: Our Journey

It is amazing how synchronicity falls into your life.  I decided, after writing my blog yesterday and thinking about those raging thoughts inside my head, that I would start my meditation practice again.  I have let it go by the wayside.  Meditation quiets the mind and encourages being in the present.

Africa: Our Journey

This is Ann again.   As I looked back, I found that my last blog was in September of 2009. I decided I wanted to share our journey together.  My committment will be to add to my blog after time with Africa.  In the last few months we have been working on Level 2 Freestyle.  We are progressing well and continuing to build our relationship.

Africa: Our Journey Part 2

Been to Florida and back, but not to the Parelli Center.  Helped two friends drive back to Michigan for their move back here.  Africa's and my journey had just begun when I last wrote.  It was a rocky road at first.  We didn't have much time to play together that first year because he was boarded at a lesson barn and I work full-time.  By the time I got to the barn, only an hour was left before lessons began.  I also misinterpreted his Horsenality.  I thought he was a Left-Brain Extrovert.  He was pushy, mouthy, and running into me, which I thought wa

Africa: Our Journey

No, not the continent.  His name is actually Shadow's Africa, a Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horse with a white marking on his forehead that looks like the continent of Africa.  My name is Ann and I've had the priveldge of playing with Africa for about two years now.

Share Parelli (cont.)

Africa and I have made astounding growth in our relationship, especially after we started the Patterns.  I could see the difference in our language.  He is thinking and understanding more.  For example, before the Patterns, I was having trouble getting Africa to understand the Sideways Game.  After working with the On-line, Level 1 Patterns he was able to follow the wall in Sideways Game.  Our communication was opened up.  I'm totally commited to Parelli.

Share Parelli

Hi everyone,

My name is Ann.  I live in Michigan near Flint.  I work as an elementary counselor with Kindergarten through fifth graders.

My horse is a gaited, Kentucky Mountain Saddle Horse, who is 10 years old.  I have had him for a year and a half.  I started doing Parelli with him right away and just earned my Level One red string.  I also attained Level 2 On-line and am working on Level 2 Freestyle.  I just came back from the Madison, Wisconsin Celebration.  It was an amazing and moving three days, where I learned so much.
