Lin's blog

I Think It Must Be The Timing!

So, although me and the 45' line are developing a relationship, Namara obviously thinks otherwise.  She will hind quarter yield beautifully on the 12' and 22' lines but is very slow on the 45' line.  Her attention wanders and at this greater distance I think my timing is way out.  When she does register my requests she is only too happy to oblige so I must think more about this and maybe play with the line without her.  On the plus side it was worming day today and she took it as if it was an apple.  Lovely Girl.

As Ever - Take the time it takes

The 45' line and me are now getting some sort of relationship Nancy bless her "does her own thing" on the end of it.  The ground has dried up now so I took her into the 4 acre field to play with it and found (most interesting) that on the 45' line she does not recognise, obey, register the request to yield her hind quarters, so its back to the drawing board and level 1 to find out where she has misunderstood me.

The Rain has stopped (Well for today)

So decided to have some time with Namara.  I am useless with the 45' line so have decided not to use anything else until I feel more competent.  Yesterday Namara decided to be very RBE so we practiced our circling and canter games - her canter was 10/10, my rope handling was 1/10 but we had a little fun with some liberty work.  Today Nan was RBI so her canter was 3/10 but I delighted to say my rope handling was 4/10.  Again we played with the liberty and I found she is quite happy with leading by the ears, front legs and hind legs which was a surprise knowing how RB

Ride For Life Speedgate

Is anyone planning on doing this?  I did it a couple of years ago in ropes - which caused a lot of interest.  I would be great to gave a few of us doing it waiving the Parelli flag.

Slowly, slowly

As everyone knows in se uk its been rather hard to do much.  I've been doing passenger game at trot, which is quite enjoyable now, and am working at the canter - just one lap of the 20x40 arena after which we both need to regain our equibrium but there is definite improvement.  We've also been working on the her draw, which is now pretty good.  This has enabled me to look at the liberty work again which is quite a comedy act.  Sometimes she is very responsive, but then will lose concentration and drift away to do look at oyher things.  I learned the hard way a

Moving Circles and the Passenger Game

The more I do of the passenger game the more I become fond of it.  Nancy being a RBI/RBE can bounce very quickly between into either extreme.  I was taught some time ago when she is RBE to do moving circles in a large field, she can trot or faster, but not walk.  This has an enourmous calming effect on her and I still use it when she is RBE.  The passenger game has the same effect on her when I am riding.  Anyone who has read all my blogs will know that Nancy gets extremely emotional as she gets faster and in the canter has become so emotional she looses all re

Waiting for Nancy to respond

I was going to call this blog "Allowing Nancy to be Wrong", but then I realised that she is never wrong.  She is either not ready emotionally or phsycally or I have not been clear enough with my requests.  We were practicing my pushing passenger game as I am useless at it (or am I?).  Nancy was following the rail on her difficult rein, but would not maintain gait (the trot).  I allowed her to drop into walk whenever she wanted to and gently asked he up a gait every time.  She responded everytime  immediately.  After 15 or so laps (I totally lost

Still finding little bits that need attention

I let Nancy catch me again today and she was very content with the saddling - a definite improvement,  I blundered around with the 45' line (need much more practice without her), gave up and let her go at liberty.  Her draw is now very good but slow, she thinks before she comes in but when she does come I have both eyes and ears forwards - a real bonus.  I'm happy I'm on the right lines with this game.  But the back up oh o.  With my new found insight I realise that this is not good, yes she will backup, but she turns her head away and always goes crooked unlesss sh

A Beautiful Day

Any one living in Kent will know exactly what I mean.  The all weather surface has dried out and the sun was shining.

At last we have running water, and running water and running water..........

The pipes have thawed and now so is the rest of the village and we are WET.  It was lovely to be able to clean every thin up and I mnaged to have a litle play with Nancy - her draw is really comming on and we play with this every time I handle her.  We wanted to have a long play session today as Madeline and I caught up on some of the dvds last night and are raring to go, but not only is the ground wet, the all weather surface resembling a lake, the rain is pouring down s play day has bee postponed until tomorrow.

Ugg this is worse than snow

The thaw has started and every thing is wet and slippery, plus the water still isn't running, but hey ho that's life.  Continues playing with Nanc with the back up and draw.  I have a strong suspicion that I have never actually taught her the draw as she has gone very introverted about it - normally a sign she doesn't understand and needs lots of thinking time, so this is the ideal weather for practicing.  I'm covered in all my ski gear and so can wait for the 4 - 5 minutes she needs to assimilate my requests.  This is the 3rd day we have worked on this game, and there i

New Challenges

Its snowing and freezing  and as not much can be done, I am practicing at cleaning the stables, preparing the feeds, putting on rugs and ropes while fully kitted up in my ski suit and gloves.  It is extremely difficult and has given me a very small insight into the challenges Lauren faced.  I plodded into the snow to play with Namara, who after initially coming up to me for a chat then said NO and turned away.  I chucked the line at her hind 1/4s and she pranced away up with the field for a gallop with the others, but then turned and faced me and trotted back.

Slow But Sure

Slight thaw today which meant the water was running in the old kennel yard half way down the hill, so not so far to drag water, about 500 meters.  Played out in the field on the 22' line today just to check hind quarter yields and the draw and drive - at last I understand the importance of these 3 and their uses.Nancy was brilliant and happily did circles with slack in the line, moving up and down paces with a finger point, but I must work on the draw.  She comes in to me, but off to one side without looking at me so I have to look at out relationship in context wit

Positive thoughts instead of New Year Resolutions

I never manage to think of good resoluitons and in this weather (Kent) life is difficult.  So I've decided to concentrate on positive thoughts.

1. Parelli has enabled me to have calm obedient horses despite the extreme conditions the are being subjected to.

2. Parelli gives me games to play with my horse in the stable.

3. The snow has forced me indoor a lot more so I'm reviewing my Parelli dvds

4. Thank the world for thermos flasks to enable me to de-freeze the horses breakfasts.

3rd January

Still it snows and still th ground is frozen luckily the water is still running and we have taken every possible way to ensurewe can get accessto water for the next week or so.  Little Billi is confined to the all weather area as he is laminitic/cushings so has been separated from the girls, We're plodding through the Level 3 discs and just trying one or two games a day and those that need more practice I'm noting downto deal with when the weather is better, but interestingly the short periods of very short games is suiting Namara and she is very alert and interested.  If I leave

Snow Circles

We made snow circles and patterns in the all-weather area today with the harrow and had great fun playing with the circles - round them, into them, stopping then starting then over a pole into them.  Namara was very motivated and interested and again I am surprised at how much she knows when she is using her brain.

Happy New Year and the snow is back

Everything is frozen and the ground is hard again so to keep us warm I called her and worked round the field practising our traveling circles and falling leaf which pleased her.  We had a few bucks but mostly she was very collected and watching me for the next move - a lovely session.

Play with the horse that's in front of you

I had full intentions of to improve our sideways and backwards but instead of my rbi I had a raving rbe who could not possibly keep her feet still, so we played with travelling circles and obstacles, some sideways and backwards with very high energy and several bucks - she never bucks - this girl continues to surprise me.  When I collected her in this evening she was back to the calm rbi I had become acustomed to and we did do some play with the poles.  Interestingly when moving to the left, slowly sideways over the pole she doesn't know what to do with her right hind leg&nbs

30th December

It might not be snowing, but its raining and raining and very cold.  Despite that we had a lovely play today.  Madeline was playing with Hatti and Milli (age 7) and her pony Billi have just passed Level 1 and they were playing on the 22' line.  Interestingly she found it easier that the 12' line because she didn't attempt to coil the rope up, just let it drag.  Namara and I joined in.  We are still going over the level 1 & 2 stuff and checking out the level 3 and so far all is going well.  Once my retro assessment is back I will pick up the tasks needed&nbs

Preparing for the next snow

Currently we are back to normal.  The girls (Namara and Hatti) are back out on the grass but Little Billi is confined to the all weather area as the frosty grass would aggrivate his laminitus. Now all the family celebrations are over I have started watching my Christmas presents - Levels 3 and 4 , Finesse and Liberty and I'm working slowly through levels 1 & 2 ground work to check if I have missed anything, and yes of course I have but Namara hasn't - she knows it all I just have to catch up with her.  I am now convinced that she is RBI not the RBE I always thought she was

Happy Christmas Everyone and I hope your water is no longer frozen

At last we have running water again and this makes life much easier.  I've only played a little with Namara  in her stable because I've been too tied to play in the snow.  It now seems to be thawing so maybe I can get a game or two in, over Christmas.  Bit of brilliant news, granddaughter (aged 7) passed Level 1 with her pony - a lovely Christmas present for her.

Winter is Here

Its a foot under snow and as the others live a couple of miles away I've elected to do all 5 horses but still managed to spend some time with Nancy in her stable.  She's very soft eyed today and was very happy to allow me to lift her leg, play with her fetlocks and her knee joint and between her front legs, so I feel that this progress is happening quicker than I thought it would as this is such a long standiing area of concern.

Friendly Game and Namara

Not a good day weatherwise for anything after shipping loads of water around as everything was frozen so I left doing anything until this evening.  All we did was lift and waggle fetlocks and it took a surprisingly long time before she relaxed her joint and let them move freely.  If we still under snow tomorrow I'll do more of the same and just maybe move up to the knee.

"How Interesting" and so we progress.................

Namara, her grumpyness and her saddle is proving SO interesting.  Friendly game round the saddle, girth and between the front legs is progressing well - no grumps, just slight tension of muscles when I initially touch her.  Her farrier came yesterday (a wonderful bare foot trimmer who takes the time it takes etc.) and with my new found knowledge realised Namara tenses up every time her front legs, knees and fetlocks are touched.  Now she is way advanced in her friendly games - I can do extreme friendly in any zone on any pary of the body, but I have just realis

Namara and her Saddle

As there doesn't appear to be a physical problem I've decided to treat her annoyance at having her girth area and between her front legs as emotional and have started using the friendly game with approach and retreat, so all saddling work has been suspended for a while - it looks like bareback work if I want to ride.  Whatever this issue is, she is still very content and friendly, so I'm not being held personally responsible for this, although I obviously am as I have had her from a yearling.
