Savvy Mustangs

A place for owners and lovers of formerly wild ones to share stories and ideas. To encourage and support fellow adopters, as well as promote adoption of our nation's wild horses (and burros). Even if you don't have a mustang, feel free to join up and learn more. Questions? Just ask. Us mustang people LOVE to talk about our horses and experiences!

Here's to the trials and tribulations of the natural journey from wild to willing!

Farrier School

I recently had a discussion with one of my horsemanship students who is due to graduate soon.   He expressed a strong desire to go to farrier school before moving on with his college education.  We've looked at several schools, but haven't decided on one yet.   If any one has advice or tips on a particular school or on farrier schools in general I'd love to hear from ya at

Howdy All!

Hello! I'm Ms. Roy Ahrens. I've been a Savvy Club member since I think 2006, and a Level 1 Grad. I'm new to the "Blogging" scene! I am 51 years young and I have 11 horses I'm responsible for. Some I do not own however. I think that Mary Ann Kenedy wrote the song "I'm  A Horse Addict" with me in mind! I am a seasonal worker; irrigating, and tractor work in the growing season. I live in the good ole US of A; southern Idaho to be exact!

Lily's Log is MOVING!

I have decided the format of ParelliConnect is more comfortable for me to document my adventures with Lily and Kiowa. While I will continue to check in here occasionally, I enjoy being able to track specific tasks and the number of hours that I have spent working on a task. I hope those of you that I have met on here will find and "follow" me on Parelli Connect! Let me know if you do, I would love to continue following your journey(s) on that site as well!

Whew!! That was close !!

Todays incident has brought me to give credit where credit is due. My mare, Dakota, was laying down, enjoying the first sunshine we have had in a couple weeks. Deciding to roll, she was too close to the fence, and had her left fore AND her left rear leg thru the bars of the fence. She managed to get her front leg out herself, before we could get to her. But he rear leg was still stuck, up to her hock. She remained very calm, for the most part, while my daughter & I thinking quickly as to what to do, and to keep her calm.

Adaptability ~ Lily's Log #42

When I went out to play with the horses today, I knew something was up. I haven’t played with Lily in a week or so due to the weather. My usually very friendly mares wanted nothing to do with me as I walked out with my carrot stick, halter and 22. Hmmmm. Rather than what has become my typical M.O. of "walk up and catch her anyway….I have thing to do!" I turned and sat on the big rock that (luckily) was dry and set my tools down. Well, not even 2 seconds later, all 3 of the horses walked right over and started jockeying for the best spot next to me!

Group Therapy~Lily's Log #41

I finally made it out to see the horses last night, now that the weather has let up. Unfortunately, the non-stop snow and/or rain has left the corral a sloppy, soggy, icy, mud bog.

Plastic and progress~Lily's Log #40

Lily and I worked on extreme friendly game today, and some circling. She LOVES the plastic bag/flag on the carrot stick! No problems there! She did have trouble keeping her feet still for the Extreme friendly witht the carrot stick and string, but ended up standing confidently. We will definitely be revisiting that on a regular basis until she is as confident as she is with the plastic bag.

entertain me! ~ Lily's Log #39

Lily has been a lot of fun the last few sessions. Tonight, I played the catching game with both Kiowa and Lily and it was very interesting, trying to balance their needs as individuals while playing with them simultaneously. I was able to get both of them to catch me together, which was really rewarding! I haltered Lily and tied the end of the 12ft lead around Kiowa's neck. Holding the middle, I was able to begin the idea of playing with them together online....a tricky task with the way they bicker!

I wish you'd never grow up~ Lily's Log #38

Well, I have come to realize that I am completely spioled by the intelligence and willingness of my beautiful horses. They make me look GOOD!

Take the Time it Takes ~ Lily's Log #37

So, I didn't want you to think I had gone and forgotten all about Miss Lily while preparing for me wedding (see my previous post for details and PICTURES!). She has been growing and improving everyday. She amazes me with how smart she is and how much try she has.

The Wedding of my DREAMS! (with pictures!)

I am so excited to be through all the planning and stress, but it was all worth it! I had the most magical wedding I could ever imagine, thanks to my perfect partners, Earl (my husband) and Kiowa (my equine soul mate). With a LOT of help from my incredible friends and family! For those who may not know, my husband Earl is deathly allergic to horses, but he refused to have a wedding that Kiowa could not have been a part of....proof I married the perfect man!

Parelli ROCKS!

I loveParrelli.

A quick update from my neck of the woods!

It seems like ages since the last time I posted! With the wedding coming up so fast and some daunting drama at work, I have be too busy to even think about anything but making time through all the commotion to spend with my girls. Rest assured, they have been getting played with regularly. Actually, I think I have been more consistent because I feel like I have to fight for every minute I get to spend with them! Thank the lord for a supportive husband!

Crabby-ness & Confidence ~ Lily's Log # 36

So today didn't go nearly as well as I would have liked, but there were a few bright spots.

You can't see, but I am actually cueing her out of frame. She used to rear as an opposition, but, by giving it a purpose, we both enjoying her "trick" now!

Time Flies... ~ Lily's Log #35

....when you're having fun! I have been so busy trying to get in as much time as possible with my girls before I go back to the reality of working 40 hours a week, I haven't had time to write!
