Eye of the hurricane! - Lily's Log #15

Mom and I decided to take the horses on a walk Sunday to get them out of the bog that the corral has become. Mom took her horse Kota and the new mini, now named "Ponytah" (my 8 year old nephew's idea!) while I had Kiowa and Lily. They all did great as we walked around the neighborhood meeting neighbors whom will hopefully soon be friends. As we were nearing the the homestretch, we were walking on a wide easement seperated from the paved street by a very deep ditch. We have crossed this ditch in this same spot multiple times without incident in the past, so I didn't think anything of it as I stopped to pick out the best spot for me to cross. There was still some snow in the ditch that hadn't melted and the horses and I both watched as a baseball-sized dirt clod had the nerve to roll down the side of the ditch, through the snow, and settle at the bottom. In the next instant, both Lily and Kiowa are flailing, running to the end of their respective leads, bucking, rearing, jumping back and forth across the ditch, and generally in a complete state of panic! Hmmmm, how interesting! I am standing in the middle trying not to get run over or let them tangle each other up, while trying to figure out how to stop them. Finally, I get Kiowa to stop on the street-side and Lily to stop behind me. Mom's house is literally across the street, so I just let Kiowa go and focused on Lily. Kiowa walked straight to the yard and waited for us, and Lily came across the ditch quietly, so all ended well. As for that dirt clod.........
