Circle of strength #4
It has been along time since I have entered into this blog. During the summer I studied the video on level I and two and practiced them sequentially and religiously. I need to remind people at this time that I do not have any arms. I do everything with my feet. We began the summer out working with Star, my quarter horse. She did really well for the longest time. Then, one day she decided she did not want to lunge anymore. Thus, she then dragging her instructor off during this exercise. She was very hard to return to her circle. The young lady working with her was not able to pull her back and return to the circle. She was not strong enough and not motivated enough to complete this task. I then took over doing the lunging holding the rope with my left foot. For some reason she would not drag me off. Thus, we were back on track with the training her sometimes the young lady other times. You could see the horse had learned who she could buffalo and she could not . Then one day she decided she would drag me off also. That is when I took her back to the round pen and did some work with her there. We did not have to work very long for her to connect up with me and follow me wherever I went. She would even back up and make a full circle facing me. I must say now that she has completed level I with me. It is a nice feeling that a horse will lead for you instead of drag you away. As for the young student I am working with, I have decided to work with in the round pen. The end of the fall with her watching some round pen video training. Come summer she will work in the round pen off lead, and on the lead before lunging outside of the round pen again. Enough said for now. We will visit again later this spring.
